SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Assemblymember Avelino Valencia and Democratic leaders stood united with Texas lawmakers to push back against President Trump’s latest attempt to undermine democratic representation.
“Redistricting should be about making sure every voice counts,” said Assemblymember Valencia. “President Trump and Texas Republicans are using it to drown out the voices they do not want to hear, especially communities of color and working families. Their manipulation of our democracy is wrong and we will not sit on the sidelines. We will call out the injustice, protect representation, and make sure our democracy reflects communities like mine.”
California leaders stood alongside Texas Democratic lawmakers in Sacramento to oppose Texas Republicans’ attack on American democracy. Assembly Democrats understand the urgent need to confront President Trump and Republicans’ dangerous political agenda by empowering voters to resist and defend democratic values.
"California Democrats will not allow Trump’s Republican Party to rig the system and take permanent control of the U.S. House of Representatives, said Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas. “We are prepared and we will fight fire with fire. We will do whatever it takes to defend our democracy. We will do whatever it takes to protect the voices, the votes, and the rights of every American."
Democratic leaders reaffirmed their commitment to California voters, emphasizing that the public will see the proposed maps and make the final decisions, through the most transparent redistricting process in the country. Members also underscored their support for California’s independent redistricting commission and pledged to protect the integrity of representative government.
