ORANGE COUNTY, CA – Assemblymember Avelino Valencia (D-Anaheim) issued the following statement regarding Supervisor Andrew Do.

“Supervisor Andrew Do’s criminal actions have shattered our community's trust. His abuse of power by directing public funds to a nonprofit led by his daughter, which embezzled millions in COVID relief dollars, is disgraceful. Instead of helping our most vulnerable residents during the pandemic, Do pocketed over $550,000 in bribe payments. This betrayal of public trust is an affront to the values we hold dear.

Our community deserves leaders dedicated to ethical governance and responsible stewardship of public resources. Today’s announcement underscores our commitment to rooting out corruption and holding those who defraud the public accountable. Last month, Governor Newsom signed my bill, AB 2946, into law, restoring public trust in how district discretionary funds are managed. The Orange County Board of Supervisors opposed my bill, effectively endorsing a lack of transparency and leaving the door open for future abuses of power.

I extend my thanks to the U.S. Attorney's Office and the Orange County District Attorney's Office for their diligent work in this investigation. Their efforts are crucial in maintaining transparency and accountability. I also commend the dedicated LAist team for their months-long investigation and high-quality journalism that brought this issue to light.

We all share a commitment to upholding the law, and we will work tirelessly to restore the trust shaken by these events. I will be introducing new legislation next year to ensure a system that prevents such abuses. Together, we will rebuild and strengthen our community, ensuring a brighter and more just future for all.”
