Assemblymember Valencia’s bill creating an Independent Redistricting Commission in Orange County is Signed into Law.

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO - Governor Gavin Newsom has signed AB 34 by Assemblymember Avelino Valencia (D-Anaheim), which will establish an Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) in Orange County, into law.

Under AB 34, the IRC will be responsible for delineating the county supervisorial districts for the upcoming 2030 redistricting cycle. Furthermore, the commission will be reconstituted following each census to carry out the task of redrawing Orange County's supervisorial districts in future redistricting cycles. This initiative is designed to ensure a fair and transparent redistricting process that places the interests of Orange County residents at the forefront.

The repercussions of unfair district mapping on our communities cannot be overstated. It has led to skewed representation, eroded voter trust, and undermined the core principle that every vote should hold equal weight. AB 34 represents an opportunity for California to set a standard for fair redistricting, underscoring our commitment to inclusive and transparent governance. This legislation takes a pivotal step toward reinforcing our electoral processes and upholding the foundational principles upon which our democracy is built.

AB 34 stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and a shared vision for a better Orange County. With this new law in effect, the Independent Redistricting Commission will assume a central role in shaping the county's future political landscape, ensuring that the interests of Orange County residents remain paramount in all decision-making processes.
